I thought it a very intuitive portrayal of what great lengths these times coerce a freedom-seeking easy rider-esque character to go to for the feeling of freedom. I'm always aware as to how much a slave I am to this society that claims me through my student loans, jobs, classes, taxes, etc. When I watched Easy Rider for the first time I was enchanted by it and thought venturing out to find freedom a more worthy cause than any in life. However, the more I pondered the quest for freedom, the more apparent the fact that the whole ordeal is impossibly complicated by all the obligations and tethers that America has on me. I have since given up the dream and, like you, settled for less. The closest to freedom we'll ever get is a chemically induced illusion.
